Why banks price odd terms so aggressively

The mechanics of pro-rating

A straight 7/12 slice of the full 4.50% annual rate, applied as simple interest, comes to $10,000 × 0.045 × 7/12 = $262.50. The actual daily-compounded payout on the same deposit is $260.09 — slightly less, not more.
